Thank you for stopping by. My name is Scott Simpson and I’m the owner of Earthwise.

The focus of Earthwise Horticultural Services is landscape design and installation for existing residential properties. Within that scope I offer a wide range of services. My approach is holistic in nature with an emphasis on long term success. Success in landscape improvements begins with a good plan. While planning your landscape we'll focus on things such as:

1. Choosing plants that not only meet your preferences but are also naturally adapted to the conditions of the landscape.

2. Deciding where and what type of sod to use (if at all); and discussing what it takes to ensure long term success of the new lawn.

3. Problem solving for any trouble areas which includes the consideration of options and identification potential pitfalls.

4. Educating you so that once we are all done, you’ll know what to do in the short term after the installation, as well as long term.

Education

I am not a landscape architect. I won't charge big firm fees. I am a horticulturalist. What this means is that I am educated, specialized, and experienced in selection, arrangement, establishment, and care of plant material in the landscape. I hold a Master of Science degree from University of Florida in Environmental Horticulture. I currently focus on existing residential work.

Inspiration

I grew up in Virginia and spent a lot of time swimming and fishing in the Rappahannock river. It was a beautiful area to grow up in and I began to understand the importance of our water resources at a very young age. What I do today shares that same passion and inspiration I knew back then. I came to realize that we must be responsible stewards of our land. Water conservation in the landscape is one small part of that idea.

People choose their career for many different reasons. I chose mine for the following:

  1. I love working with people to make their landscape vision a reality!

  2. So that I could make my living doing something I believe in.

  3. I had to do something that would have a positive impact on the world and people around me.

  4. I love working outdoors.

  5. I enjoy the artistic side of landscape design and enjoy working with plants, stone, and other natural materials.

My research focused on water conservation in the landscape by the use of climatic factors to schedule irrigation. In business, I have expanded this to include other ways to conserve water such as:

  • Correct plant selection

  • Irrigation system calibration

  • Cultural practices (such as plant care & mulching)
